Why Your A/C Freezes Up in Summer (and How to Stop It)

It sounds backwards: it’s 90 degrees outside, yet your air conditioner is covered in ice and barely cooling. A frozen A/C is one of the most common summer problems we see in Washington, D.C. and Maryland — and the causes are usually preventable.

Why ice forms in the first place

Your A/C’s indoor coil gets cold to pull heat and humidity from the air. It’s designed to stay just above freezing. But when something disrupts the balance — too little airflow or too little refrigerant — the coil drops below freezing, condensation turns to ice, and the ice spreads until the system can’t cool at all.

The two main causes

Restricted airflow

This is the most common culprit, and the most preventable:

  • A dirty air filter
  • Closed or blocked supply and return vents
  • A dirty indoor coil or blower
  • Collapsed or undersized ductwork

Low refrigerant

If the system is low on refrigerant — usually from a leak — pressures drop and the coil gets too cold. This needs a technician to find the leak and recharge the system; simply adding refrigerant without fixing the leak is a temporary patch.

What to do when it freezes

  1. Turn the A/C off at the thermostat. Running it frozen can damage the compressor — an expensive repair.
  2. Set the fan to On to help the ice melt faster.
  3. Wait for it to thaw completely — this can take a few hours.
  4. Replace the filter and make sure vents are open before restarting.

If it freezes again after that, the cause is deeper — likely refrigerant or a dirty coil — and it’s time to call.

A yearly tune-up prevents most freeze-ups by keeping the coil clean, airflow strong, and refrigerant where it should be. Our NATE-certified team finds and fixes the real cause, not just the symptom. Request A/C service.

Frozen A/C FAQs

Can I just scrape the ice off my A/C?

No — never chip at the ice; you can damage the coil. Turn the system off and let it thaw on its own, with the fan running to speed things up.

Why does my A/C keep freezing after I thaw it?

If a fresh filter and open vents don’t fix it, the cause is usually low refrigerant from a leak or a dirty coil. Both need a technician to resolve properly.

How do I prevent my A/C from freezing up?

Change the filter regularly, keep vents open, keep the coil clean, and get an annual tune-up. Strong airflow and proper refrigerant levels are what keep the coil from icing over.
