Common gas furnace problems we fix

Most no-heat calls trace back to a handful of causes, and many are straightforward repairs rather than a reason to replace:

  • Furnace won’t ignite — a failed igniter, flame sensor, or a problem in the ignition control is one of the most common no-heat causes.
  • Blowing cold air — often a thermostat setting, an oversized temperature swing, or a furnace short-cycling on a safety limit.
  • Short cycling — turning on and off too frequently, usually from a clogged filter, airflow restriction, or an overheating limit switch.
  • Strange noises — banging, screeching or rumbling can point to ignition delay, a blower or bearing issue, or a part working loose.
  • Yellow or flickering burner flame — a sign of incomplete combustion that should be inspected promptly for safety.

Furnace safety: heat exchangers and carbon monoxide

A gas furnace burns fuel, so safety is part of every visit. The heat exchanger is the component that keeps combustion gases separate from the air you breathe; a cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide into the home, which is why our tune-ups include a combustion and flue inspection. If you don’t already have working carbon monoxide alarms near your sleeping areas, add them — they’re the most important backstop in any home with gas appliances.

Repair or replace your gas furnace?

Furnaces typically last 15–20 years with maintenance. As a rule of thumb, if your furnace is past that range and facing a major repair, a high-efficiency replacement usually pays back in lower gas bills. Efficiency is measured in AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) — older furnaces often run around 80% AFUE, while modern high-efficiency models reach 95% or more, meaning far less of your fuel dollar goes up the flue. We’ll size the replacement to your home as it actually is today and give you an honest repair-versus-replace comparison — never a hard sell.

Pairing a new furnace with one of our maintenance agreements keeps it running efficiently and protects it with priority service and 20% off repairs.

Gas furnace FAQs

How long does a gas furnace last?

With annual maintenance, most gas furnaces last 15–20 years. Past that, efficiency drops and parts get harder to source, so a major repair is often the moment to weigh replacement.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Common causes include a thermostat set to “on” instead of “auto” (so the fan runs even between heating cycles), a clogged filter, or the furnace shutting down on a safety limit. If the basics check out, it’s worth a diagnostic visit — it’s usually a repair, not a replacement.

What AFUE efficiency should I look for in a new furnace?

Modern furnaces range from about 80% to 98% AFUE. High-efficiency models (90%+) cost more up front but use less gas every winter; we’ll help you weigh the payback for your home and how long you plan to stay.

Is a cracked heat exchanger dangerous?

It can be — a cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide to mix with your home’s air. It’s one of the things we inspect during a furnace tune-up, and it’s why working CO alarms are essential in any home with gas heat.

Do you service all furnace brands?

Yes — we repair and maintain all makes and models, and we’re a factory-authorized dealer for Lennox, Trane, American Standard, Rheem, Ruud, Bryant, Carrier and York for new installations.
